What is an NFT and why am I selling one?

Well firstly, here are things it isn’t. Some of my favorite wrong answers are:

  • Non-functional trends

  • Northern fried tacos

  • Ninja fighting tattoo

  • An online retreat center for millennials

So what is an NFT? NFT stands for Non-Fungible Token. When an item is non-fungible, it means it cannot be replaced with anything of exact value. Any $5 bill can be replaced with another $5 bill and you’ll have the same exact thing, USD are fungible. Something is non-fungible when there is only one version of it (a one-of-one painting) and cannot be replaced with anything else because there is nothing of exact equal value.

NFTs have recently taken the internet by storm in the form of digital art, movies, and NBA Top Shot highlights among others. People have started to sell more than just art and trading cards as NFTs however… recently a Croation tennis player sold ad space on her arm as an NFT for 3 ETH (~$1,540). It’s wild.

Most interestingly to me, Jack Dorsey sold the first ever tweet as an NFT for 1,630.58 ETH (~$2.9 million) in late March. He then turned the proceeds into Bitcoin and donated it to Give Directly Africa Response. The buyer of Dorsey’s first tweet, Hakan Estavi CEO of Bridge Oracle, said he’s valuing it like fine art.

This is what inspired me to then consider selling one of my tweets. Well, in fact, only after someone suggested it to me via Twitter – at first which made me chuckle, then I quickly thought why not?

So I thought back to the tweet that went viral, with over 500,000 views, 4,000 likes, and 700 retweets, (four days earlier) and decided I was going to try and sell it. Soon after that, I heard from CEO and Co-founder of Kyndoo.com, and within 24 hours, my tweet went on sale.

The brilliance of this tweet to me is that it is so simple. Five words that got the attention of half a million people and started a very interesting conversation. You have to see all the threads that were started. Some people agree, some people disagree. But that's the beauty of Twitter right? I was blown away at the response, how 27 characters can made so much impact.

Why am I selling it? Well, the question at the moment is why aren’t you selling anything? There is something absolutely fascinating about creating value out of thin air. And it’s a reminder to me of the time we live in.

So again, this tweet is now for sale as an NFT. Want to buy it?

***Update: The NFT is now sold***
