Your idea is not your business

So often founders will send pitch decks and demo videos my way with little context and ask for feedback on their idea.

Now, there’s a small chance I understand the problem you are solving, in which case I could provide some insight into the idea. Great.

But in most cases I can’t relate, and have no clue if it’s a good idea or not. For anyone who knows me, I love to help founders, and provide feedback, but the ‘idea’ is just one data point.

Here are some of the questions going through my head:

  • Cool, so why are you building this?

  • Who is your target audience? Age, location, gender, occupation, etc.

  • Have you spoken to some people in your target audience?

  • Do most of the people who are in your target audience say that need this?

  • How many people have already expressed interest in this?

  • How long until the product is ready?

  • What else is the app/site going to do?

  • What is your grand vision?

  • Who are your competitors?

  • Why are you better?

  • Who’s working on this with you?

  • What else have they built?

  • Again, why are YOU building THIS?
